Discussion: Applied Behavior Analysis EssayWeek 4 discussion: experience in behavior analysisCOLLAPSE

I started working when I was 14 years old as a cashier on a military base. Once I turned 18, the amount of homelessness and mental health crisis had become prevalent and the job I was doing in customer service seemed insignificant. I asked my mom to help me get a job at her place of work. At that time she was a case manager for individuals that suffered from mental illness. From that point on I worked in and managed facilities like care homes, halfway homes, and transition homes for the previously incarcerated. While working in this field, I became fascinated with why some of the individuals in these facilities behaved in certain ways and the triggers and antecedents that caused these behaviors. I’m 2017 I moved to San Antonio and obtained great knowledge on autism, behaviors, and the functions of behavior.

Unfortunately, the company that I started with, lacked the proper resources to equip me with tools to effectively assist in regulating extreme behaviors. In 2018 I completed the registered behavior technician courses and became an Rbt. Since then I have provided both in-home and clinic therapy to children ages 2-10. Once I become a BCBA, I’d like to start in the clinic that I currently work at. After gaining some hands-on training and much-needed experience; I would like to start my small practice. The most important goal is to use my platform and become an advocate for those children and individuals that have minimal or no access to ABA therapy. I feel it is my mission and imperative to provide continuous therapy to those that have autism to enable them access to the highest quality of life.

Kudos to you for realizing your passion in life and going for it.  You seem to be a very ambitious person and I have no doubts that you will succeed in whatever you set your mind to.  I’m embarking on a completely different career path once I complete my Masters degree.  I’ve been in the business realm for over 2 decades, so I’m somewhat nervous in changing paths in my mid-40s.

According to a blog I found, “as autism diagnoses increase, shortage of ABA therapists remains a problem; new government study finds 1 in 40 American children has autism (Butterfly Effects, 2019)”.  It’s very admirable of you to want to open your own practice someday.

You have made a significant decision to further your formal education in the field of applied behavior analysis. You likely have an interest in behaviors and their relationship with the environment and a desire to learn and apply behavioral techniques that will help individuals achieve beneficial behavioral change. While applied behavior analysts work with individuals of different ages, the skills of an applied behavior analyst are especially needed with children with autism.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020) reports that autism spectrum disorders (ASD) affect 1 in 54 children, representing a tripling of the prevalence rate since 2000. The respected and specialized behavior analysis assessment and intervention strategies you employ in your role as an applied behavior analyst can help autistic children and others with developmental issues to learn new skills and meet behavioral challenges.

For this Discussion, you will analyze your decision to embark on a course of study that will lead to your becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
