By using a combination of psychotherapy and medication therapy, psychiatric nurse practitioners (PNP) are positioned to provide a very unique type of care to patients with psychiatric disorders. To be successful in this role, you must have a strong theoretical foundation in pathophysiology, psychopharmacology, and neuroscience. This foundation will help you assess, diagnose, and treat patients as you relate presenting symptoms to theoretical neuronal functioning.

Question 1
The cell body of a neuron has lysosomes and the nucleus which undergo degradation and synthesizes all neuronal membranes and proteins. The axons conduct impulses from the cell body. Neurons also have dendrites to receive signals from the termini of other neurons (Ashley & Lui, 2020).The synapse is a neuron to neuron dendrite connection that carries information from a presynaptic to postsynaptic neuron.

Glial cells do not take directly take part in electrical signaling and interaction at the synapses. They include oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, and micro glial cells. Oligodendrocytes are found in the CNS and lay down myelin in axons. Myelin plays a major role in conducting a neuron’s action potential speed. Astrocytes are found in the spinal cord and brain and help in maintaining an appropriate environment that promotes signaling of neurons. Microglial cells are obtained from the neural and hematopoietic stem cells. They are scavenger cells that remove cellular debris from injury sites.
Question 4
When a nerve impulse reaches a synapse, it activates calcium gated channels to fuse with a terminal membrane discharging neurotransmitter to the synaptic cleft (Ashley & Lui, 2020). Neurotransmitter molecules diffuse across the synaptic cleft and binds on the postsynaptic cell through receptor proteins as illustrated in the diagram below. When receptors in the postsynaptic cell activated ion channels on the membrane open and close leading either to hyperpolarization or depolarization.

According to Puderbaugh & Emmady (2020), neuroplasticity is the ability of neural networks and neurons in the brain to alter their behavior and connections in response to sensory stimulation, new information, dysfunction, and damage. It takes two forms namely; functional reorganization and collateral sprouting/neuronal regeneration. The latter incorporates concepts of neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity while the former incorporates aspects such as diaschisis, and equipotentiality.
