The PubMed database is a free database that archives biomedical and life sciences literature at the US National Institute of Health’s National Library of Medicine (National Institute of Health 2017). PubMed Central is a repository of journal literature by participating journals. The participating journals must go under review for scientific and editorial quality before being archived in the database. The database can also cross-reference data from diverse sources using a common format. This can help enhance research knowledge for clinicians.

The Cochrane and Medline database can also be used to research our health topics. Medline is a bibliographic database that contains more than 24 million references to journal articles in life sciences. A distinctive feature of Medline is that the records are indexed with medical subject headings (US National Library of Medicine). It is also the primary component of PubMed. The majority of publications are scholarly journals. The Cochrane collaboration is an independent group of researchers interested in improving health. The work together to produce credible accessible information.

I felt the Cochrane Database made the most sense to use when applying three key questions. The Cochrane Database is the leading resource for systematic reviews which provides the strongest level of evidence, which is level one and level two. The first thing we have to ask when looking at a research article is validity and reliability. Finding articles with random control trials would provide the strongest evidence for our topic in order to apply it to clinical practice. We also have to look at why a study was being done? Obviously, the independent researches are clinicians who have experience their fields and know what questions to ask and look for in their research. Lastly, what does this mean for clinical practice? Well controlled studies are needed to know if the interventions a clinician comes up with actually works in healthcare. I felt the Cochrane database had the best evidence based studies to apply to my clinical questions.
